Nuclear Submarine Dismantle
Location:
Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Washington
Description:
Sicklesteel provide cranes to assist the Navy with the Submarine Recycling Program (SRP). Before the SRP can begin, the nuclear fuel is removed. The hulls are then towed to PSNS where the submarine is cut into three or four pieces: the aft section, the reactor compartment, the missile compartment if one exists, and the forward section. Since 1992 there have been more than 75 attack submarines and 30 ballistic missile submarines that have been dismantled.
